Names play a rather interesting  part in the hunger games. Katniss is an edible plant commonly known as arrowhead, and Pita (Peeta) is a type of bread. Starting to see a pattern here? I think Suzanne Collins put a lot of thought into the names for her characters in the books. A lot of her names seem to be slightly off a common name (Peeta - Peter and Pita), or an name that is not used so often (Rory and Vick). Names also are reflected by where the character is from (Glimmer and Marvel from District One, which are known for their stupid names). The citizens of District Twelve get named after a lot of plants. Johanna Mason is the only character with a common modern day name.

The Pita-Peeta Problem

If you have been a fan of the hunger games for even a short bit you will notice the amount of jokes over Peeta Mellark's name. You can purchase 'Peeta Bread' shirts, or browse through forums dedicated to laughing about his name. (Poor Peeta) Honestly, I think it gives people another excuse to call Peeta "Weak" or "A sissy", but it is pretty fun.
